However, we all know that after using a phone for a while it may begin to slow down and consume excess battery. Especially because the battery isn’t that large to begin with. The best way to fix this is to root our phone. In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to root the Galaxy Note 5. Rooting your device means to gain access to certain parts of your phone that you normally can’t access due to the restrictions put on by your manufacturer. Think of it like a Windows computer. You have unlimited access to this operating system as long as you know what to look for. This access allows you to download certain apps that can do things to your phone that couldn’t be done on a phone that has not been rooted. Rooting also allows you to download operating systems (known as ROMs) that are extremely fast, have removed bloatware, and can do things that your phone couldn’t have done before. The process is fairly straightforward. As long as you follow the instructions exactly as detailed, you won’t have issues. Just be forewarned that rooting your phone using this method will trip your Knox counter. The Knox counter is a security mechanism in the device that lets Samsung know whether you attempted to alter the device in any way. Root the Note 5 Using Odin
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way let’s get started on rooting your device We’re going to root your device using an application called Odin that is basically an application that is made for installing Samsung files onto Samsung devices. In order for this rooting method to work you’re going to need to be running Android version 5.1.1 So let’s find out what version you’re running. To find out if you have the correct version go to Settings>About Device > and check to see if it says Android version 5.1.1 If your Android Version says any other number DO NOT CONTINUE. This guide is for Windows computers only. If you are using an Apple computer, you may not want to continue. I can not verify if Odin works on other operating systems.
Step 1:Backup your stuff
Backup your information! If you’re a person who keeps a lot of important files and documents on your phone then you should definitely backup your information. You don’t want to lose your pictures, contacts, messages, applications and other information that you may want to keep. Truthfully, if you sync your phone with Google, your contacts will automatically load into your phone as soon as you sign in again. However, there are other ways to save your contacts. Also, consider downloading smart switch in order to backup your files. Smart Switch will back up nearly everything on your device to your computer and will restore your device back to the way it was. Step 2: Charge your phone
When the rooting process begins your phone will not care about how much of a charge you have on your battery. If you have 5% of your battery left it will still attempt to root the phone until the point that it dies. When your phone dies in the middle of the rooting process, your phone is bricked. This is because it never got the chance to fully install the software that it needs to function. So to be safe charge your phone up to 100%. While in my personal experience I have rooted phones with less than 100% battery, it’s better to be safe and sorry in the rare case that your phone requires a very long time in order to complete the root.
Step 3: Download Samsung USB drivers
There are two ways to get the drivers that you need, indirectly through Kies 3, which is a program created by Samsung that installs the drivers for you, or to download the drivers directly without downloading Kies.

Step 4: Enable USB Debugging and unlock your bootloader
USB Debugging allows the phone to be altered through the USB cord. In order to enable this go to Settings>More>About Device and look for Build number. Tap that 7 or 8 times in order to unlock “Developer mode” Once it says “You are now a developer” go back to Settings>more and Developer options will appear above About Device. Then you can check the box next to USB Debugging and OEM unlocking.
Step 5: Determine the model number of your phone
You’re going to have to find out if your phone is the correct phone for this specific rooting process. If your phone is from a network or location that this guide doesn’t cover there’s a huge chance that you might brick your phone. In order to find out what model your phone is, go to Settings>More>About Device. The model number is listed here. Step 6: Put phone into download mode
This will put your phone in a mode that allows your computer to root your phone. First, turn off your phone. Then hold the volume, power and home button down at the same time for a few seconds. A warning screen will pop up. Press volume up to continue. It will now say Downloading. Do not turn off target!
Step 7: Run Odin and root your phone.
If you haven’t already done so, download Odin and unzip the file to your desktop. Open the Odin application and plug your phone in. If your phone is detected by Odin it will show up as a blue box under 0:COMM Check the box next to PDA then click the PDA button to load the root kernel file that you downloaded in step 5. Once you open the file in Odin click the start button and Odin will root your phone. Your phone is successfully rooted when it says pass in green. Once your phone is back on, we now need to download an app from the play store called SuperSU. This app will make sure that all applications ask you for permission to run processes on your phone that are normally restricted.
